Why We Need a Greater Diversity of Experts for Effective Public Dialogue

One of the key outcomes from the ‘Use of Experts’ workstream report was for the role of experts to be more carefully considered in the planning and delivery of public dialogues. This article looks at one aspect of that report – to advocate bringing in a greater number and diversity of experts in public dialogue and why that is becoming even more pertinent.In the public dialogues Sciencewise-ERC has funded and advised on, a sample of members of the public is asked to deliberate on an issue, exploring their hopes, fears and aspirations so that policy can be better informed by those views.

Nuclear secrets revealed after unencrypted USB stick found in Cumbria hotel room

18th October 2010 – Reports are coming in that an unencrypted USB stick – apparently containing details on the Sellafield nuclear site’s operations – was found by a coach driver in a Cumbria hotel room. And, says Credant Technologies, the endpoint data security specialist, it seems that the USB stick contained details of the nuclear firm’s proposed workforce transfer from its Capenhurst operation in Cheshire to uranium specialist Urenco.one.

Chair of Police watchdog: Can anyone tell me what is so fundamentally wrong with the British Model of Policing?

‘Whilst there are areas for improvement in the current policing arrangements, I am extremely sceptical that USA-style elected commissioners and an FBI-esque National Crime Agency are the answer to our problems. I have no axe to grind with the US or its system of government, but I do know its different from the UK, and not everything from across the Atlantic can be imported and transplanted here.

Budget 2010: Major public sector cutbacks are underway, however savings can still be delivered without hitting frontline services

The emergency budget has given us the first real indication of how and where the coalition’s major spending cuts are going to occur. Chancellor George Osborne has spelt out the agenda in recent weeks, explaining that, “decisive action to deal with Britain’s record budget deficit” , estimated to be running at £149 billion annually with a structural deficit of £113.5 billion- is the top priority or else the country is on the “road to ruin”.
